Before we start, if I could get an idea of who is putting out CDs
New marketing model
fairly high level discussion
marriage of CD and on-line together
Folio trying to develop information marketplace
the important thing is a groundwork
FIT Folio Infobase Technology
Information one time, deliver to multiple platforms
Author into FIT,
LAN
CD
Lotus Notes
WWW (Brand)
WANs and VANs
for distribution
Author one time as infobase, no modification, deliver to all platforms
Information Marketplace
Electronic commerce
Between producer and consumer of professional/reference information
NOT the killer app like pizza on demand
Focus is on professional, typically reference information
not for a novel or movie
distributed over Wide Area Networks, CD-ROM
$12 Billion market for electronic information
Also multi-billion market for Networking
For VAR / ISV - people in trenches
increasing competition
lower margins
commodity market
Important foundation
New opportunities
1 - ubiquitous connectivity - Novell is aiming for 1 billion nodes - some to control things like heating / lighting, not all computers
2 - high bandwidth capacity - full rich multimedia, rich images
3 - secure transactions - content providers are afraid to put information up
4 - built-in infrastructure
5 - open architecture
- tools for building
- authoring tools
- critical mass of content - people willing to put content out there
- copyright - how to clear
Library of Congress, National Digital Library, great resource, but not copyrighted material
- for sale information, need clearing house to track transactions - collect and disburse funds
Folio - must be revenue opportunity for the channel
Limitations
- not open
- inadequate production tools
- app dev tools still maturing
- No critical mass of content
- no copyright clearance services
- no clearinghouse function
- limited revenue opportunities for VARs
The Information Marketplace
- provide solution for existing providers
- focus on high-value information - NOT consumer information - consumer information gets most media attention
- offer critical mass immediately - 500 publishers, 2000 titles
- offer incentives
The Components
- producers and consumers of information
- toolkits to develop information - drop onto repository
- repository available through VAR or direct to consumer
Internet infrastructure
OR NCS
AT&T Netware Connect Services
the pipes
Novell with AT&T - pervasive computing - based on Novell's directory services
AT&T is infrastructure
That would solve bandwidth, but still need clearinghouse.
Electronic Yellow pages
Today, tax code on CD. But updated only monthly.
Customers want it MORE current. Problem is replication costs.
Better to make it on-line.
If you are publisher, authenticate user.
Payment to clearinghouse, who then distributes payments to producer, VAR, software developer.
Not Open -
Production Tools
APP DEV tools
At Folio - partners
Lexis-Nexis, Reed Elsevier
Copyright Clearance Center - for paper documents
Opportunities
author one time
multiple distribution
copyright
payments
standard
for VAR
revenue from app
derived revenue
consulting revenue
training revenue
Corparte Users
more info, easier
customized Info Apps (ex. FDIC standard interface)
1000s of infobases
Summary
info more readily available
an application will be shown later
Phase 1
The first step is metering capabilities - WAV Infosource Infosave agreements
AT&T and Novell
at their mercy, no release until 1996
First step - beta on WWW 30-45 days out.
Phase 2 - other networks, more security.
National Biological Service is on NII
EPA
under Deptment of Interior
CD complementary to Internet
Tomorrow - CD ROM and the Internet session
Part 1 is moderated by Mike Martin of JPL
Part 2 by Brand Nieman
Did I see role for HDCD?
Very definitely. All three CDs would be packaged in one
Kiosk
Infobase on Web Home Page
Gap analysis
a pyramid
High end mm at top
base - very detailed that researchers want
in between home page/reference
package all on one CD ROM
for physical and electronic distribution - and in jukebox on LAN
Packages of info available, including runtime of information base kiosk.
NII is Whitehouse initiative
http://
will show Internet
Spatial data conference on May 7
meta data
serve up data about data for new spatial data sets
next step is to prioritize, create meta data for legacy data
Author once for CD-ROM and the Internet.
using Folio, little or no HTML or WAIS - link HTML to WAIS
use of Folio eliminates this
at geo-data forum, this was problem - difficult/expensive to do
Two points
content and functionality
technology and how imiplemented
First CD
Information kiosk, reviewing internally now.
CD
NBS Infobases, NBII - National Biological II
Mosaic browser of same information.
Info Kiosk
Done inhouse with expert help
Macromedia Director - higher end multimedia than can show on internet
whole approach is not to be limited by distribution now, port as much as possible to WWW
distributable now on CDROM
Hybrid CD ROM, both PC Windows and Mac
Very easy on Mac, harder
Only thing holding up public distribution is testing on PC Platforms.
Did inhouse with help from outside in about 2 months
doing story boards and script
took 6 months to gather info.
Proud that you can boot up multimedia CDROM on the fly.
32MB of RAM on this machine - to run Web server.
Purpose - at exhibit
kiosks around country
inform about NII
(Music plays)
icons explained
mission statement
video clip
(tiny video plays)
project was a team effort
full page of credits
a year ago I would not have attempted to do this inhouse
today, the training makes it possible for agencies to do this type of presentation
What is NBII?
A distributed federation of data and information sources.
Antithesis of warehousing concept
Leave information where it is and point to it - some centralization of necessity
What are major components
pointers to web pages
Interactive distributed system
one or more biological scientists -quality of data
access to data
tool access
network together
How building?
NBS Home Page - infobases on CDROM - stil not full connectivity in organization, especially in state and local government. To get info out. Even after connectivity, some data better NOT to download. Most comment, can you put this on CD?
Tomorrow, how to put large data on both CD ROM and the internet.
Content, how designed,
how CD on hard drive
how authored from WordPerfect files
other data files
Design
make databases look identical - just like HTML
press releases, info kiosk
Directory of files
put on CD ROM - with folio - setup, infobases, multiples data files
Installation on hard drive
very small footprint with folio
Example of Infobase
Added Table of Contents to WordPerfect
These were automatically converted to hypertext - without HTML
Two sample screens - done in 1/2 hour - actually put this up on server
Reveal Codes Mark Table of Contents
Cross Reference - to target in WordPerfect
As an infobase
Three examples
NBS Spatial Metadata catalog - WP5.1 file, maintained in WP
for CDROM and Web - refilter it on the fly every time they change it
NPS 3 inch thick, not in WP, update direct into Folio
NBS WP went to Folio, including Photo CD images - get slides and photos onto a CD.
Panasonic allows capture from CD.
Folio
video Not on web
(another tiny video - but cool flyover of Utah - interactive - pauses. Satellite technology)
Folio permits non-commercial distribution of runtimes.
Video IS on CD-ROM
40 videos on disc for Earthweek, coming from Redmond/Whitehouse
Dynamic Table of Contents, expandable
Query view
Table of Contents - shows distribution of hits
NOW, boot up NT server
first describe what you will see
Folio Infobase on Web - lacks Word Wheel, but all else is there.
more / previous link - if large doc broken into HTML
first home page - 500 page WP doc broken into 150 sub docs.
never again
Table of Contents, expanded/unexpanded
Q: Search beyond the infobase on Web?
No. Don't get word wheel, adds display options.
query hits highlighted with red markers.
Folio Web Server may be easier/cheaper than WAIS.
Much easier than indexing
Standing offer to help people - reflected on home page
Will contrast this with WAIS at another session.
Either put Mosaic on CD
OR take large files on Web and also put them on CD ROM
Q: Total size of disk? Total size of install?
For MM CD 150MB - including Macromedia runtime
video clips - will put many more - could easily fill one whole CDROM - full kiosk CDROM, including
Folio Infobase CDROM is 100MB
Folio - underhead technology - usually about 50% reduction due to compression.
Hypertext products have drawback - 2x 3x with indexes - lss of conern now, but very nice feature not always available
database tomorrow - 2 full CDs - also require ArcInfo - hdcd with all 48 states
We are learning a lot about Windows NT Server set up. Had to max out on RAM for this notebook, set up as dual boot machine. Before yo umake it exclusively NT, not al 3.1 apps will run.
NT is installed off CD. Once it is installed, it does not recognize the CD! No svga driver either.
NT is very sophisticated. 32 bit. Server in backgbround, Moasic in forebroung.
Q: Does access speed become issue on CD
From Web to CD is slow.
Server is very robust, maintains stats.
Infobases stored through LAN
documentation is not complete yet, but also infobases
Enhanced Mosaic
Parsing infobase into HTML on the fly
Very full function database searching.
TOC
hits from full text search
more navigation buttons to navigae hits
How rapidly can you make change and make it come up on Web -
open infobase
type in change - as done every day
VERY Seemless offereing - NO HTML
Press releases need to go out exactly when they need to go out
First up with IP address protection, then put up immediately
Person who does the press release can author in WP, change access, release
Q: Using big TOC?
Size is not a problem. If TOC is in the 100000s of entrys will be slower.
If going 1,2,3 layers deep OK. If 15 layers, performance problem.
Q: What about Copyright Clearance?
See me after. Status is - they are just one solution. Joint deve - open API, others could play into it. Not everyone wants to use CCC - really pilot / alpha mode now.
Q: Source docs in WP. OTher files? Lke lotus?
Not only WP. NBS is has standard. Most things strated there. Could keep refilter. Folio has many conventional filters, dbase is additional. I have not come up with problem earlier.
John Williams, ProInfo, really large, large files, file search and replace.
Ex. Global Change - SQL has gone in - meta data for 15 databases. Moved with special tools. Full search capability. Came out of a VAX a couple years ago. Has links to WAIS and SQL Servers. THought to be valuable to 3rd world Folio has another product - Web Retriever - caputre Web page and put it in Infobase - makes them more searchable. Let people view collection of Web pages.
Q: Dial up?
Right now, no inter-infobase links. Does support links to other URLs.
Q: can you have it autodial and connect when needed?
Contact Folio.
Our system is broken into about 50 home pages.
Q: Can you import/export SGML?
Yes. Talk to Darron - buy Exoterica - SGML two way filter.
Q: For PageMaker -
Pagemaker is most difficult. Manula of federal data products - on last years sigcat showcase disc. Want to audition showcase disc. Goal from last year - make available to as many as possible. Put on showcase disc. for 12 or 15.
Started a year before last years disc - started at EPA, done in Pagemaker, very difficutl to get clean export, cleaning it up. Now, more automated tools from Folio
I think it illustrates advantage of author once philosphy. What are the endpoints - CDROM AND Internet - Folio and SGML is very attractive. Filter to different end points.
Leaves you with question of legacy documents. People will help you move these.
Q: Offer clarification. Dial on demand with PPP. That's can be done better through hardware. You can buy today Combinet will use ISDN lines on demand, hardware detects demand, opens ISDN line to meed demand. The kind of thing you would do at hardware level.
Q: Most people would not have ISDN.
Q: More latency with dialup. ISDN 1-2 seoncds. POTS has delay.
Q: How do you anticipate licensing?
I hate questions like that. For those charging - a percent royalty. Similar on Web. Attach a royalty. Depending on what you are charging. 5-8%. Minimum and maximum. Similar for Web publishing. If NOT charging, no charge. No royalty charge.
Intro price of $7000. If selling info, no royalty charge.
